Interviewing Asian American Entrepreneurs

A 2022 study, “Immigration and Entrepreneurship in the United States,” conducted by professors across MIT Sloan, Northwestern, Wharton, and the US Census Bureau found that immigrants are 80% more likely to found their own firm than U.S-born citizens. It may be due to the inherent difficulties with entering the workforce as Asian Americans…or it could suggest that immigrants are natural “job creators.”

Interviewee#1

This entrepreneur is the co-founder of YouTube, the world’s largest video-sharing platform. Under his leadership, YouTube revolutionized online content creation and was later acquired by Google.
Prior to founding YouTube, he studied computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also gained experience working at PayPal, where he met his future co-founders. Born in Taiwan and raised in the United States, he navigated the challenges of immigration and cultural adaptation, which shaped his entrepreneurial journey.

Interviewee #2

This entrepreneur is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of a hotel investment and management company. It operates on a national scale, and has partnerships with all the major hotel brands, such as Marriott, Hyatt, and Hilton.  

Prior to founding, he graduated from the Hotel School at Cornell University and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. He also has extensive experience in real estate and private equity. Lastly, he is the son of Chinese immigrants, and grew up helping their parents with acclimating to the country and overcoming language barriers.

Interviewees #3 + 4

These two seasoned entrepreneurs are the founders and former owners of a successful restaurant based out of Maine. They left Taiwan with their son to start anew in the U.S. They have extensive experience with restaurant ownership, having started two other restaurants prior to their most recent.
